Newly-elected officials sworn into office

A new sheriff, new register of deeds, and 15 new county commissioners were among those who took oaths of office yesterday morning in the historic Jefferson County Courthouse.
Slone quoted Souix leader Sitting Bull, who said, “Let us put our minds together and see what kind of light we can make for our children.”
Sworn into office were newly-elected Sheriff Bud McCoig and Register of Deeds Ed Stiner. Taking their oaths for new terms were County Mayor Alan Palmieri, Trustee Ginger Franklin, Circuit Court Clerk Penny Ollis Murphy, and County Clerk R.E. “Rick” Farrar.
Hornets shut out East Ridge, 12-0

DANDRIDGE The Maury Middle football team used a strong defensive effort Tuesday night to overcome three fumbles and pick up its first win of the season, a 12-0 decision over visiting East Ridge.
“Defensively, we challenged the players all week and they really responded,” said Maury head coach Jerry Branch.
“If we can just get the offense and defense to play well on the same night, we will be an exciting team to watch.”
Williams is chosen to lead
Appalachian Electric Cooperative

Greg Williams has been named to become the new General Manager and Executive Vice-President of Appalachian Electric Cooperative, effective December 1. The announcement was made Tuesday by AEC Board President Robert Drinnen.
Williams, 51, who has spent his entire career with the electric utility headquartered in New Market, currently serves as Vice-President of Engineering and Operations. He will replace Bill Underwood, who is retiring after a long career with AEC, including the past 12 years as General Manager.

Marshall Edwin Hargrave
Marshall Edwin Hargrave, of Jefferson City, TN, passed away August 28, 2010, at Life Care Nursing Home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Helen Goff Hargrave; daughter, Marsha Ellen Hargrave; sisters, Laura Mae Hargrave and Helen Barger; brothers, Lawrence, Frederick, Marion, Charles, Russell and Harper. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Roberta Gilkerson Hargrave; daughter and son-in-law, Barron and Carolyn Lee of Dallas, NC; granddaughter and husband, Lauren and Mark Dixon; great-granddaughters, Anna Grace and Ansley Kate Dixon of Gastonia, NC; grandson, B. Whitney Lee of Jefferson City, TN. He is also survived by several nieces and a nephew. Mr. Hargrave was born on a farm near the village of Lewis Station, MO, July 20, 1916. The family moved to Clinton, MO, when he was in the 4th grade, he graduated from Clinton High School in 1934. During those years of the Great Depression, jobs were not available for young people. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935 and served in Missouri and Idaho until October of 1936. During the WWII years, he worked for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, KS, until May, 1944, when he was drafted into the US Navy. Following Boot Camp in Farragut, Idaho, he served in Alaska and California until his discharge in June 1946, he returned to Wichita and to Boeing Aircraft. He made commitment in January 1947 to pursue a Christian vocation. That fall he enrolled at Oklahoma Baptist University, Shawnee, OK. He graduated in 1950 with a BA Degree. He then attended New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary where he earned his MRE Degree. He began his ministry at First Baptist Church, Albemarle, NC in June 1952. He was called to serve at College Park Baptist Church, Greensboro, NC in 1958. His next place of service was First Baptist Church of Boone, NC for 10 years. He came to Jefferson City First Baptist Church as Minister of Education in 1971, and retired in December 1981 as Minister to Senior Adults. 1982 was a year of transition as he became involved in volunteer work. During the following years, he made ten overseas mission trips. He served as coordinator between Tennessee Baptist Convention and the Michigan Baptist Convention for 10 years. He also served as a volunteer for nine years in two kindergarten classes at Jefferson Elementary School. Mr. Hargrave is the recipient of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award from Carson-Newman College in 1984; The Abundant Life Award from Carson-Newman College in 1994; and the School Bell Award from the Jefferson County Education Association in 1997. Family and friends gathered at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 30, 2010, at Jefferson Memorial Gardens for the Committal Service. A service of Worship and the Celebration of Life was held at 7:00 p.m. Monday, August 30, 2010, at First Baptist Church with Dr. Gene Wilder and Reverend Barron Lee officiating. The family received friends from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. Monday prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Marsha Ellen Hargrave Endowment Scholarship Fund, Carson-Newman College, 1646 Russell Ave., Jefferson City, TN 37760, Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty, 200 Maryland Ave. NE, Washington, D.C. 20002, or a charity of your choice. Farrar Funeral Home, Jefferson City, was in charge of arrangements.
Mamie A. Owenby
Mamie A. Owenby, age 104, of White Pine, went to be with her Heavenly Father, August 27, 2010. She was a member of Edward’s Chapel United Methodist Church and was retired after many years of service from the White Pine School Cafeteria. Preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Owenby (1956); daughter, Estelle; son, Gordon; parents, Ike and Ida Thornton Hill; sisters, Gladys Hance, Inez Hensley and Ruby Gann. She is survived by her daughters, Faris Austin, Carol Ann Bailey and husband, Stergal, and Gwen Smith and husband, Larry; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; special friend, Lorraine Wylie. Funeral services were held Sunday, August 29 at 8:00 p.m. at Farrar Funeral Home Chapel, White Pine with Rev. Christine Bean officiating. Graveside interment services were held Monday, August 30 at 11:00 a.m. at Seahorn’s Chapel Cemetery, Dandridge with Rev.Charlie Harkleroad presiding. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the charity of your choice in her memory. The family received friends Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm prior to services at the funeral home. Farrar Funeral Home, White Pine, was in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy L. May, age 93, of Jefferson City, formerly of LaFollette, passed away Tuesday, August 31, 2010. Preceded in death by son, Joseph A. May. Survived by sons, Major Bobby D. May and wife, Janice May of AR, Dailey A. May and wife, Pam of TX; grandchildren, Cindy Piper, Debbie Kindy, Bobby D. May, Jr., and Krista Evans, all of TN, and Laura May of NC; several siblings. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, September 2 at 10:00 a.m. at Campbell Memorial Gardens, LaFollette. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Gideons. Cross-Smith Funeral Home, LaFollette, is in charge of arrangements.
Jennie Gardner Crowe Pitts
Jennie Gardner Crowe Pitts, age 88, of New Market, passed away Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at her home. She was a member of Bethel Missionary Church and retired from Jefferson Memorial Hospital Housekeeping Department after 25 years of service. She was preceded in death by husbands, Hodge Crowe and Hubert Pitts; sister, Molly Smith; brother, John Myers; daughter, Helen Love; grandsons, Frankie Love and Timothy Gentle; granddaughter, Lisa Green. She is survived by daughters, Ruth (Don) Hurst and Ann (Jr.) Berry; sons, Carl (Judy) Crowe, Bobby and Steve Crowe; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 32 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; several step-children. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, September 2 at Fielden Chapel with Rev. William Bradley and Rev. Kyle Cate officiating. Interment will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 3 at Jefferson Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Fielden Funeral Home, New Market, is in charge of arrangements.
