Self-funding energy project now $3.8 million
Smaller project due to ventilation issues in schools

A self-funding project to address energy waste in local schools will not be as large as first anticipated, school board members were told Thursday evening.
Engineers with the Trane Corporation, who have been working on the project for more than a year, said the self-funding portion of the project now appears to be $3.8 million rather than the original estimate of $5.5 million.

WHITE PINE – Despite the fact that his squad had already beaten White Pine by double digits three times this season, Rush Strong head coach Jason France knew his squad was in for a battle when the two teams met up in the Three Rivers Conference semifinals Tuesday night.
That’s exactly what the Plainsmen got.
Despite making just 1-of-6 free throws in the waning moments of the game, No. 2 seed Rush Strong managed to hang on for a 25-22 win over their cross-county rivals.

City takes first step to renew old downtown

Jefferson City will apply for state assistance that could help them begin a downtown revitalization program.
Meeting in regular session Monday night, the group approved a resolution authorizing application to the Tennessee Downtowns program. They also appointed a five-member steering committee that will assist with the work.

Richard Lee Bier
Richard Lee Bier, age 63, of Dandridge, passed away Sunday, January 31, 2010, at his home following a brief illness. He was born on May 21, 1946, the son of the late Harold and Dorothy Mason Bier. He graduated from North Miami Senior High School in Miami, Florida in 1964. Following graduation he joined the Air Force and served a tour of duty in the Vietnam War. He retired after 15 years of service in the Air Force. Following retirement he continued his aviation profession working as a mechanic and inspector at Edwards and Associates in Piney Flats, and Director of Maintenance for Wings Air Rescue in Johnson City. He also worked at Scenic Helicopter Tours in Sevierville and at Vertiflight in Maryville as Director of Maintenance. He attended Shady Grove United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife in 1977, Sherrie Lee Bier. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Phyllis Bier of the home; daughters, Landy (Scott) Tomaro of Mountain Home, Idaho and Tammy (Jeff) Rouse of Glade Spring, Virginia; son, Micheal (Tonya) Bier of Elizabethton; step-children, Barbara Jean Baxter of Talking Rock, Georgia and Sandra Dee Thomas of the home; 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, February 3 at Farrar Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Scott Brady conducting the services. Interment graveside services with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, February 4 in Mountain Home National Cemetery in Mountain Home, Tennessee. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday prior to services at the funeral home. Farrar Funeral Home, Dandridge, is in charge of arrangements.

Robert ‘Bob’ Clevenger
Robert L. “Bob” Clevenger, age 88, of Dandridge, resident of Jefferson County Nursing Home, passed away Sunday, January 31, 2010. He was the son of the late Melvin and Callie Goforth Clevenger. He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Lorene Clevenger. He was a decorated veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific Theater and was a popular long-time electrician and business owner of the Dandridge community prior to his retirement. He is survived by his nieces, Ruth Sax, Audrey (John) Headrick and Earlene Eddington; nephews, Ralph (Barbara) Smith, Jim (Mildred) Large and Al (Margaret) Large; great-niece, Norma (Mike) French; great-great-nieces, Mitzi (Darrell) Donahoo, Melanie (Marty) White and Melinda (Darrin) Breeden, and their children, Hunter Donahoo, Lakin and Lex Breeden. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 2 at Farrar Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mark Knisley conducting the services. Interment graveside services with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 3 in French Broad Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hopewell Presbyterian Church (Blues Backpack Program), P.O. Box 812, Dandridge, TN 37725. Larry Michael Hamilton
Larry Michael Hamilton, age 51, of Strawberry Plains, passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2010, at his home. He was a member of Holston Baptist Church. He was an employee of Standard Knitting Mill in the cutting room for many years. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Amanda Hamilton; father, Charles Hamilton and grandmother, Oma Cook. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Darlene Hamilton; daughter, Chasity Hall; grandchildren, Brianna Hall and Jeffrey Parker; grandfather, Clayton Cook; mother, Wanda Hamilton; sister and brother-in-law, Robin and Don Walker; nieces, Summer and Courtney Walker, all of Strawberry Plains; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family. Funeral services were held Thursday, January 28 in Fielden Chapel with Rev. Hubert Bunch and Rev. Larry Young conducting the services. Interment was held Friday, January 29 in Strawberry Plains Cemetery. The family received friends Thursday prior to the services at the funeral home. Chane Leroy Hutsell
Chane Leroy Hutsell, age 60, of Greeneville, formerly of Richwood, Ohio and White Pine, passed away Friday, January 29, 2010, at the VA Medical Center in Mountain Home. He was a veteran of the Vietnam Era and attended Mountain Valley Church of the Brethren in Greene County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Hutsell and Cordia Marie Parks Shaffer; brother, Parks Hutsell. He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Karen Hutsell; children, Caleb Hutsell, Katina Phillips and Dee Dee (Rodney) Wilson; grandchildren, Jacob, Kaylee Hutsell and Cody Wilson; step-father, Hal “Mouse” Shaffer; brother, George Hutsell; sisters, Ada Shults, Jane Blair, Ginger Denton and Vanessa Thornhill; several nieces and nephews; special friend, Harold Hubble. Funeral services were held Monday, February 1 in the chapel of Farrar Funeral Home in White Pine with Rev. Wolfgang Weiland conducting the services. The family received friends Monday prior to the services. Military graveside interment will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 2 in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Dorothy Lorine Lyle
Dorothy Lorine Lyle, age 78, of Dandridge, passed away Saturday, January 30, 2010. She was preceded in death by her son, Lynn Williams. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Sammie Lyle; sons and daughters-in-law, Allen and Stella Lyle, Clarke and Pat Lyle, all of Dandridge; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren, brother and sister-in-law, Gordon and Peggy Williams; sister, Helen Childress; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday, February 1 in the east chapel of Atchley Funeral Home. Family and friends will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 2 in Fain Cemetery for a graveside service and interment. The family received friends Monday prior to the services at the funeral home. James Hugh Proffitt
James Hugh Proffitt, age 68, of New Market, passed away Friday, January 29, 2010, at St. Mary’s Hospice in Halls. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Jefferson City. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nelle and Otis Proffitt; grandson, Caleb D. Proffitt; sisters, Betty Marlow and Ottie Smith; brother, Billie Proffitt; brother-in-law, Bill Smith. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jennie and Matt Hempel of New Market; sons and daughter-in-law, Robbie A. and Sonya Proffitt, and James P. Proffitt of Knoxville; grandchildren, Skyler, Haven and Addisyn Hempel of New Market, Shaunna and Tyson Proffitt, and Shannon Johnson, all of Knoxville; great-great-grandson, Barrett Johnson of Knoxville; sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Bill Rogers of New Market; brothers and wives, Richard and Jodie Proffitt of Speedwell, John and Pat Proffitt of Knoxville, and George Proffitt of Jamestown; brother-in-law, James Marlow of Mason, Ohio; many nieces and nephews. J.T. ‘Jack’ Henshaw
J.T. “Jack” Henshaw, age 78, of New Market, passed away Monday, February 1, 2010, at his home. He retired from Asarco Mines with 32 years of service. He was the son of the late Jim and Betty Henshaw. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jo. Proud to serve his country, he enlisted in both the Marines and the Army and saw combat in the Korean War, reflecting upon his service with great pride. He is survived by his children, Barbara and Michael Wood, Marilyn and David Miles, Sherry and Bill Elmore, Randy and Tammy Henshaw, Sheila and Ralph Kline, Darrell and Lisa Henshaw, Stacy and Kim Henshaw, Cynthia and Michael Nelson; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters, Pauline Bruner and Nell Steadman; brother, Robert Henshaw; special friend and neighbor, Louise Stallings. Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 3 at Farrar Jefferson City Chapel with Rev. Dwayne Whittington conducting the services. The family received friends Wednesday prior to the services. Tamela Lavene Menendez
Tamela Lavene Frison Menendez, age 44, of Jefferson City, passed away Saturday, January 30, 2010, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville. She was a member of AME Zion Methodist Church in New Market. She was preceded in death by her father, Zack Marshall Frison. She is survived by her husband, Arndrell Menendez; son, Marquise Menendez; mother, Peggy Ann Nance Frison; sister, Joy Frison Mills and brother, Jerry “Buster” Frison. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 6 at Farrar Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Horace Roger Mills, Jr. conducting the services. Beulah M. Moore
Beulah M. Moore, age 76, of Dandridge, passed away Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at her home following a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Dewey Moore. She is survived by her children, Linda Gilbert and her fiancée, Danny Baker of Morristown, Dewey Moore (Janet Williamson) and Imogene (Jeff) Watson, all of Dandridge; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Heather) Watson, Nicole Gilbert (Brandon Foster), Tiffany Watson (Travis Seals); brother, Frank (Ruth) McGill; sisters, Sally Thomas and Barbara Croxdale, all of Knoxville; several nieces, nephews and many friends. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, February 4 at Farrar Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charlie McGill and Rev. Bill Denton conducting the services. Interment graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 5 in Dandridge Memorial Gardens. James ‘Howard’ Parker
James “Howard” Parker, age 71, of Dandridge, passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2010. He was a charter member of Agape Baptist Church and was a retired plumber and electrician. He was preceded in death by his wife, Viva Reneau Parker; parents, Briscoe and Eula Parker; brothers, Henry and Donald Parker; mother-in-law, Esta Reneau. He is survived by his daughters, Jane (David) Harlow, Bobbie Parker, Penny (Ricky) Houseright, Tammy Parker, Becky (David) Dean, Vickie (Breau) Barile, Toni Parker and fiancée Tony Cate; grandchildren, Curtis Lindsey, Dustin (Jessica) Maze, Andy (Jennifer) Houseright, Ashley (Daniel) Finchum, April Parker, Bridgette Parker, Tessa Banks, Hanna Parker, Aliyia Martin (Houseright) and due in April, great-granddaughter, Rylee Alizabeth; brothers and sisters, Jean Brady, Betty Sliger, Kathy Spears, Darlene Scruggs, Doyle and Roger Parker. Effie Cleo Roberts
Effie Cleo Williams Roberts, age 88, of Talbott, passed away Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at her daughter’s home in Jefferson City. She was a member of Thankful Baptist Church and was also a great prayer warrior. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis B. Roberts; parents, William “Bill” and Ailcy Barnard Williams of Lee County, Virginia; one sister and six brothers. She is survived by her daughters, Ruth (Leon) Morgan of Rutledge and Darlene (Glenn) Hipsher of Jefferson City; grandchildren, Nancy Moles, Scott (Nancy) Morgan, Patsy Byrd, Paul (Jane) Byrd and Daniel Hipsher; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Taylor, Zachary Byrd, Dylan Moles, Langley and Chandler Morgan; a host of nieces, nephews and friends; special neighbors, Clyde and Louise Laughlin, and caregiver, Judy Collins. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 4 at Farrar Jefferson City Chapel with Rev. Dennis Alder and Rev. Glen Sufferidge conducting the services.
