Sewer project funded
$4.5 million in grants, loans for Jefferson City

Jefferson City will receive $4.5 million in USDA Rural Development loan/grant funds to upgrade its sewer plant and extend lines to newly-annexed areas.
Rural Development State Director Bobby Goode and members of his staff visited Jefferson City Tuesday to make the announcement. The new project is part of a multi-million investment the town is making in its water and sewer systems in order to be prepared for the future.

MORRISTOWN Jefferson County was represented by three teams in the semifinals of the Middle Eight Conference tournaments at East Ridge Middle School Tuesday night and all three came out on the wrong end of their respective games.
In the boys’ bracket, top seed Maury rallied from a double-digit deficit against No. 4 East Ridge but wound up dropping a 54-50 decision in overtime. Later in the night, sixth-seeded Jefferson was blown out by No. 2 Lincoln Heights, 65-40.
In girls’ tournament play, No. 2 seed Maury suffered a 50-47 loss to third-seeded Rutledge. Top seed West View advanced with a 64-21 rout of No. 5 Greeneville.
The consolation and championship games of the tournament are scheduled for tonight.
BAE Systems closing plant

Defense contractor BAE Systems is closing its Jefferson City plant, according to a notice filed early last month.
The January 4 notice indicates that 57 employees who remained at the plant after a workforce reduction last August will lose their jobs, effective March 9. The workforce at the plant includes 55 full-time BAE workers and two temporary workers. The reduction is permanent, the notice states.

Louise Denton Ailey, age 94, of Jefferson City, TN, passed away 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 27, 2012, at Life Care Center of Jefferson City following a lingering illness. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Preceded in death by her husband, J.V. Ailey; parents, Mel and Frances Denton; sisters, Eleanor Phillips and Swannie Myers; brothers, Jim, Jack, Shields and Bill Denton; son-in-law, Don Shockley. Survived by daughters, Barbara Shockley of Jefferson City, Mary Frances (Gerald) Barbee of Jefferson City and Eloise (Frank) Breeden of Chattanooga; five grandchildren, Jim (Kaye) Breeden, Teresa (Kevin) Mullins, Katrina (Tim) Wright, Donna (Chip) Mallett and Deana (Trey) Daniels; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Roger Denton of Jefferson City; sisters, Jean Holbert of Jefferson City and Jane Watts of Morristown; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, January 29, 2012, at Farrar Funeral Home, Jefferson City with Dr. Sonny Strange and Reverend DeWayne Whittington officiating. Family and friends gathered at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 30 at Farrar Funeral Home for a procession to Jefferson Memorial Gardens for an 11:00 a.m. graveside interment service. The family received friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Sunday prior to the services at the funeral home. Wilma Louise Gann
Wilma Louise Gann, age 77, of Kodak, TN, passed away on January 29, 2012, at her home. She was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church and former owner of North View Diner. Preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Gann; parents, Jake and Venice Jones; brothers, Danny, Floyd, Jack and Frankie Jones; granddaugher, Jennifer Gann. Survived by son, David Gann; sister and husband, Nadine and Carol Hardin; grandsons and wives, Jason and Laura Gann, Josh and Monica Gann; great-grandsons, Lucas and Matthew Gann; great-granddaughter, Miranda Bailey; best friend, Nina Reigning. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 31 at Fielden Chapel with Rev. Ronnie White officiating. Interment will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 1 in Shady Grove Cemetery. Joseph S. Milner, Jr.
Joseph S. Milner, Jr., age 77, of Dandridge, TN, passed away Monday, January 30, 2012, at the Jefferson Health & Rehabilitation Center, Jefferson City. Son of the late Beulah Robbins Milner and Joseph S. Milner, Sr. Preceded in death by brother, John Milner and sister, Della Pruitt. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and the Korean Conflict having participated in “Operation Castle” atomic testing at Marshall Islands. He was a member and deacon at the First Baptist Church of Dandridge for over 30 years. Member of Smoky Mountain Mineral Society and was noted for his jewelry design and stone faceting. Joe retired as an engineer from Phillips Consumer Electronics in 2000 with over 30 yrs. of service. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Judith A. Milner; children, Rena M. (Mick) Myers of Greeneville, TN, Wendy J. (Wilton) Miller of Travlers Rest, SC, Joseph M. Milner of Boaz, AL, Edman J. Milner of Sevierville, TN; grandchildren, Cami, Trey, Rebekah, Daniel and Peter Miller; Gloma and Ezra Milner. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Thursday, February 2, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Dandridge with Dr. Robert Brown and Dr. Robert McCray officiating. Jerry Marshall Price
Jerry Marshall Price, age 55, of Dandridge, TN, passed away early Saturday morning, January 28, 2012, at his home. He was born on August 27, 1956, in Knoxville, TN. He is survived by his parents, Lige and Mary Belle Price, his daughters and their husbands, Brenda Mize (Kevin Mize) and Amanda Schoap (Jonathan Schoap); four grandchildren, Lily and Samuel Mize, and Anderson and Emily Schoap; brother, Terry Price (Sue Price); nephew, Terry Price, Jr.; sister, Carol Merritt; niece and nephew, Randy and Sarah Merritt. Jerry was selflessly dedicated to caring for his parents, and when he wasn’t with them, you could find him on Cherokee Lake with a fishing rod in hand. He was an amazing cook and an incredibly talented carpenter and handyman. He had an unmistakable sense of humor that was contagious to everyone around him and a personality that kept everyone entertained. To his grandchildren, whom he dearly loved, he was Pappaw Jerry- - the best Pappaw in the whole world. Jerry is so loved and his life will be forever cherished by all those that he touched along the way. Imogene (Jean) Hill Rutledge
Imogene (Jean) Hill Rutledge, age 96, of Jefferson City, TN, passed away early on January 29, 2012, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville, TN, of complications of cardiac and pulmonary disease. Since losing her husband in February 2010, she had resided in Maryville, TN with her son and daughter-in-law. Born September 3, 1915, to the late Ben D. Hill and Hattie Raines Hill in Cocke County, TN, she was raised and lived in Cocke and Jefferson Counties. She was a graduate of New Market High School. She was married to her beloved husband Charles (Charlie) J. Rutledge April 1946. In 1952 she became the adored mother of Charles David (Dave) Rutledge and devoted herself to managing a nurturing home for her family. As her parents became infirm, she was a pillar of strength in their comfort and care. A devout Christian, she had been an active member of Northside Baptist, Magna-View Baptist and most recently Emmanuel Baptist Church and had served as an intermediate girls and an adult Sunday School teacher, as well as a participant in several church service organizations. She was blessed with a relatively long period after Charlie retired to enjoy his companionship, and the company of her extended family, gardening, and local travel. She is survived by her son, Charles David (Dave) Rutledge, Pharm.D., M.D. and daughter-in-law, Jean Styke Rutledge, DPh. of Maryville, TN; brother-in-law, Robert F. Sellers of Jefferson City, TN; sister-in-law, Jo Scott of Arcadia, IN; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Charles (Charlie) Joe Rutledge; parents, Ben D. and Hattie R. Hill; brother, James F. Hill and sister-in-law, Ruby; brother, William R. Hill and sister-in-law, Bonnie; sister, Wilma Hill Sellers; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, W. Harold Rutledge and June, L. Paul Rutledge and Inez, Ed and Edith Pappas; brother-in-law, Leon D. (Shortie) Rutledge; sisters-in-law, Frances Rutledge and Edna Davis, and nephew, Pete Davis. Gary R. Hardin, age 64, of Strawberry Plains, TN, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2012, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center after a lingering illness. He was precceded in death by his parents, Herman and Leona Hillard Hardin and brother, Teddy Ray Hardin. He is survived by wife, Brenda Gail Hardin; niece, Cassondra (Daniel) Hensley; great-nephews, Tanner and Spencer Hensley; special cousins, “Shot” (Linda) Hillard, Chuck (DeAnn) Hillard, Scott (Telena) and Jerry Lynn Sherlin; mother-in-law, Zella Sherlin; aunts, Sue Arwood and Laura “Punchy” Kryder. The family wishes to thank the 7th and 8th floor nurses at Fort Sanders and the staff at Amedisys of Jefferson City for their love and care they gave during his illness. Nancy Shults Long-Renfroe, age 72, of Jonesboro, TN, formerly of Dandridge, TN and Borger, TX, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2012. She was the daughter of the late Jack Derreberry and Goldie Derreberry Smith and was preceded in death by infant son, Eddie Shults; brothers, Jim and David Derreberry; sisters, Mary Jane Paddock and Betty Ray. She is survived by son, Fred (Pam) Shults, Jr.; grandchildren, Ethan and McKenzie Shults, Gwen Boyer and Travis Sampson; sister, Barbara McSpadden; several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 2 at 7:00 p.m. at Farrar Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Darrell Chambers officiating. David L. Voiles
David L. Voiles, age 68, of White Pine, TN, passed away Monday evening, January 30, 2012, at Morristown-Hamblen Hospital following a brief illness. He was the son of the late Lonnie and Anna Belle Cupp Voiles and was preceded in death by his sisters, Betty Voiles and Helen Paxton; brother, Buster Voiles. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Korea as a military police. Member of the First United Methodist Church of White Pine. David was active in his community for many years by serving as Alderman for the Town of White Pine and served Jefferson Co. as a member of the E-911 Board and the Animal Control Oversite Board. He also enjoyed being involved with children’s recreation and was co-founder of White Pine Junior Pro Basketball. David retired from the Town of White Pine as Codes Enforcer and later worked in the Facilities Dept. for Jefferson Co. He is survived by beloved spouse, Carolyn Churchwell Voiles; sons, Christopher Voiles of White Pine and Michael Voiles and wife, Laura and grandchildren, Josh Arwood, Brett and Bryce Voiles, all of Greeneville; sister, Evelyn Hybarger and husband, Wayne of Moshiem; sister-in-law, Louise Voiles (Max) Woody who along with her first husband, Buster were instrumental in the raising of David. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to White Pine First United Methodist Church or the White Pine Interchurch Council, % Ginger Marshall, P.O.
