Dr. Kitty Coffey, longtime chair of Carson-Newman University’s Family and Consumer Science Department, has seen more changes than she could ever have imagined in her 53 years in higher education – 42 of which have been dedicated to C-N.

“When I first came to C-N, we taught courses in foods and nutrition, child and family, textiles and clothing, home management, and home economics with a teacher licensure option. Now we are called Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) with five majors and four emphases, but all still revolve around the important concept of family,” explained the department head who retired last week.
