Trucker pinned in tractor

Firefighters and rescue personnel work to free 60-year-old Ki Kim from the wreckage of his truck Saturday afternoon after the tractor-trailer left I-40 near Exit 417 east, ran up an embankment and smashed into a tree. – SUBMITTED

Emergency personnel worked for two hours — and enlisted help from two wreckers and a high-lift loader — to rescue an injured trucker trapped in his overturned rig after it veered off Interstate 40 Saturday afternoon.

Driver Ki Kim, 60, of Tenafly, New Jersey, was conscious and talking to rescuers, but his legs were pinned beneath the dash of the 2014 Volvo tractor after it crashed into a stand of large trees near the 417 mile-marker, Dandridge Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Steve Williams reported. Kim was later airlifted to University of Tennessee Medical Center by Lifestar helicopter.
