Darlene Gilbert enjoys a field trip at Zoo Knoxville with several of her Mt. Horeb Elementary first graders. She has as a keepsake a t-shirt adorned with cartoon caricatures of each student in her last class – a final tribute to a 33-year teaching career. – SUBMITTED

“When the county was building Mt. Horeb Elementary, I asked my boss, Sandra Austin, ‘Are you taking old teachers?’  She laughed and told me to get my application in. I have been at Mt. Horeb since (it) opened.”

Darlene Gilbert posed the question seven years ago. Instead of “old teacher” she could have referred to herself as a well-rounded teacher who has taught elementary, middle, and high school students in her 33-year career.
