On the last day of September, the sun was considering setting as it cast splashes of white on a horizon that was soon to go pink and orange.

It was stupidly warm on the southern edge of New Market one week into fall. The climate was not the only thing that felt out of sync at the 222-year-old Dumplin Baptist Church. Another wrinkle was the backdrop of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son” and Tracy Chapman’s “Give Me One Reason,” along with current Christian music.
