Her grandfather’s cell phone has a video of five-year-old Makayla Alvey playing shortstop for the first time in a T-Ball game at the Field of Dreams in Dandridge.

She harangues the kid at the plate with an incessant, “Swing, batter, swing!” She fidgets and jumps and even momentarily flexes her muscles body-builder style. When the ball comes her way she’s on it, despite the fact it takes a bad hop and strikes her protective facemask. She turns as if to throw to the outfield, but quicky reverses and figures out where to send it.
