CLARKSVILLE - After winning last year’s Little League state championship against St. Bethlehem, the South Jefferson 50/70 All-Stars baseball team came up short in their title defense, falling to the Clarksville Nationals, 7-4, on Monday in the 2019 state tournament at the Civitan Sports Complex.

The All-Stars had a deep run in the tournament thanks to their strong pitching staff and their consistency at the plate. South Jefferson used seven pitchers – who combined for 28 strikeouts – and landed 30 singles throughout their four-game run, but the high-caliber Clarksville Nationals outplayed South Jefferson across 12 innings in two games and secured the title for themselves. “We started out pretty hot and just ran out of gas at the end,” said Jamey Southerland, head coach of the All-Stars. “We didn’t hit the ball as good as we needed to in the championship and just got beat by a good team. We’ve had such a great group of kids these last two years, and we just had an off day on the last day.”
