Motions to rezone Strawberry Plains land for a slaughterhouse failed during Monday night’s quarterly meeting of the Jefferson County Commission.

The 9-9 vote – two short of a majority, with a couple of Commissioners abstaining – drew applause from a large group of neighbors, many of whom said their main objection was an I-2 zoning category that would have opened the site to not just a slaughterhouse designed for local farmers, but also potential uses such as waste incenerators, landfills, and chemical plants in their agricultural/residential area.
