Core group of C-N assistants reflect on coaching life

Mike Turner (left), Carson-Newman University’s most previous head football coach, tells a story that holds the attention of his longtime colleagues, Dan Redding, Mike Whitley, Billy Mitchell and Jim Deaton. The C-N assistant coaches combined to provide 140 years of total service, some of which included five NAIA national titles in the 1980s. – MARK BROWN | THE STANDARD BANNER

When they gather, as they try to do fairly regularly now that they all have finally retired, Jim Deaton, Billy Mitchell, Dan Redding, Mike Turner and Mike Whitley bring with them well more than 200 years of combined football coaching experience.

The bulk of that total, 140 years of it in fact, comes from their employment at Carson-Newman University, most of it as assistants to Ken Sparks and all of it, they say, because it was where they wanted to be.
